Returning to Impact Staff

February 4, 2021 by Mikayla Barnes Leave a Comment

Posted: 2/4/21 at 10:00am. Article by Samantha Richard.

I was so grateful for my experience with virtual Impact last summer and I loved it so much that I am back again this summer! I cannot wait to be able to see people (in person instead of through a computer screen!!) and be able to share and learn about the word of God through mission work. I have never attended Impact in person before, so I am sure this will be yet another amazing experience! I will be so happy to see everyone’s faces and get to know everyone more through our walk with Christ.

Last summer I was so excited to be in person when Covid-19 hit and changed our original plans of being in person with you all. Since I had never been to Impact as a camper or staff member, I was pretty disappointed about not being in person. However, God proved that even in those challenging times, we still found ways to interact with campers and spread His word whether it was through daily devotionals on Instagram and Facebook, or through our many TikToks we created over the summer. Our theme last year was Better Together and these challenging times of being in quarantine has definitely made me realize that being together is so important in doing God’s work. I am excited about our new theme this year which is “RE:Created.” I believe this is a great way to think of how our time during this past year has allowed us to realize that God has been using this time to refresh our minds and renew our spirits to better serve Him.

I am truly blessed to be able to participate in Impact again this summer and I am even more blessed to be able to share my personal walk with Christ with you all. This pandemic has changed all of our lives and I am so incredibly thankful that we are working diligently to be able to provide a camp in person that is safe and enjoyable for everyone. Being able participate at

Impact is truly a blessing and I am so excited to meet everyone and continue our journey with Christ together!

Advent Devotional 2020

Hope

First Week of Advent

Mark 13:24-37

Remember a year ago?  We were all talking about how 2020 was going to be the best year.  Major holidays on the weekend, the Olympic Summer Games, and lots of great movies on the horizon.  It…hasn’t exactly gone how we expected.  We’re entering the time of Advent again – a time of anticipation of what God will do in the coming year. And we begin with a time of Hope.  And the Hope of Advent is a hope that comes to us in darkness. In Mark 13, Jesus was preparing his followers for dark times ahead – and offering hope.

13:24 But in those days, after that suffering, the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light,
13:25 and the stars will be falling from heaven, and the powers in the heavens will be shaken.
13:26 Then they will see ‘the Son of Man coming in clouds’ with great power and glory.
13:27 Then he will send out the angels, and gather his elect from the four winds, from the ends of the earth to the ends of heaven.

He offered a message of hope to people who had been through terrible trials and had more to come.  Whatever you have experienced this past year, the season of Advent is a time to remember that Christ offers us hope.  We pray that you will have eyes to see hope in what God is doing and a willingness to share that hope with others.  Join us this season as we reflect on the Hope, Peace, Joy, and Love that God offers us through Jesus.

Peace

Second Week of Advent

Isaiah 40:1-11

If we look up peace in a dictionary, we’ll read about absence of conflict or a period of tranquility.  But to someone speaking of peace in the time of Jesus would have had a much fuller concept – peace, or shalom means a lot more – harmony, wholeness, and completeness.  Over the past year, with so much isolation and seemingly so much taken away from us, it’s difficult to feel whole right now.  But the promise of Advent is that God is working for Peace – and that peace will make us whole.  It’s peace that Isaiah was offering when he said these words:

40:1 Comfort, O comfort my people, says your God.
40:2 Speak tenderly to Jerusalem, and cry to her that she has served her term, that her penalty is paid, that she has received from the Lord’s hand double for all her sins.

Wholeness is coming.  Redemption is coming.  During Advent, God is offering peace to all of us.  Rest in the peace God offers you.

Joy

Third Week of Advent

Isaiah 61:1-4

Everything was about to change.  Jesus took the scroll in front of people who had known him from childhood and had a lot of notions about this upstart kid.  And in the middle of this small, unimportant town, the change Christ would bring to the world really began.  In that moment, scroll in hand, he read these words from Isaiah:

61:1 The spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me, because the LORD has anointed me; he has sent me to bring good news to the oppressed, to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and release to the prisoners;
61:2 to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all who mourn;
61:3 to provide for those who mourn in Zion– to give them a garland instead of ashes, the oil of gladness instead of mourning, the mantle of praise instead of a faint spirit. They will be called oaks of righteousness, the planting of the LORD, to display his glory.
61:4 They shall build up the ancient ruins, they shall raise up the former devastations; they shall repair the ruined cities, the devastations of many generations.

Later this week, we’ll read Mary’s song – the Magnificat.  Placed in a scary situation, but when the spirit of the Lord came upon her, in spite of fear and uncertainty, she sang a beautiful song of joy.  When the spirit of the Lord breaks forth, the world moves toward Joy.  Good news for the oppressed, comfort to the brokenhearted, liberty to captives, and prisoners set free.  Joy comes from the most unexpected places.  Where does joy come from for you this season?

Love

Fourth Week of Advent

Luke 2:8-14

A child is born and God’s love comes in the flesh.  The heavens themselves sing out in praise, and the message of love, by coming first to shepherds in the fields, becomes a love that is available to all.  The wait is almost over, the birth of Christ comes this very week. Read the story of the first people hearing that Good News:

2:8 In that region there were shepherds living in the fields, keeping watch over their flock by night.
2:9 Then an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified.
2:10 But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid; for see–I am bringing you good news of great joy for all the people:
2:11 to you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is the Messiah, the Lord.
2:12 This will be a sign for you: you will find a child wrapped in bands of cloth and lying in a manger.”
2:13 And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host, praising God and saying,
2:14 “Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace among those whom he favors!”

This week we celebrate the birth of the Messiah – God coming to earth to teach us how to love as God loves.  In this season when love is easy to give and to receive, but at a time when it is so easy to choose anger and fear, choose to love – as God loved us by sending Jesus Christ to us.

Nerves Can’t Stop Me

August 4, 2020 by Mikayla Barnes 2 Comments

Posted: 8/4/20 at 11:00am. Article by Beth Dale.

When I first heard about Impact! Mission Camps, I was pretty hesitant to participate. Spending a week of my summer waking up at six in the morning to go to worship, then go to work on a house for eight hours in the sun did not seem very appealing to me; until my first day at camp when I was just twelve years old. As soon as I got there I knew Impact was something I wanted to do for as long as I could. Being surrounded by people of faith and being able to make a real, hands on difference in your community is an amazing experience that everyone should be able to participate in. After that first week I had set a personal goal for myself that as soon as I was old enough I would apply to be on staff. Spending a whole summer doing mission work that I had such a strong passion for sounded like the perfect opportunity for me.

After being a camper for seven years, I finally reached the age to apply for Impact staff. I was not sure if it was actually what God had in my plans, but after applying I had a feeling that this is exactly what I was meant to be doing. It was then, after waiting for seven long years to be old enough, I was officially welcomed onto the Impact 2020 team of staff and I could not have been more grateful to God for granting me this chance. Although we were all saddened to hear that COVID-19 had ruined our chances of having an in person camp this year, we were still blessed to have been able to put together a completely virtual version of what Impact is. This summer has taught me a lot about what it is to work as a team and it has taught me that just because things don’t go exactly as planned, does not mean that your plans are ruined.

Before coming to meet the rest of the staff and spend the summer with them I was a nervous wreck; I was scared that I wouldn’t fit and that I would miss home. It was almost just like my emotions from my first year of camp, I was horrified right up until I walked in the door and met the rest of the wonderful staff.  Everyone was so welcoming and I truly believe that God put us all together for a reason. These people have taught me so much, from cooking some sweet desserts, to showing me how to be a better person and Christian. I cannot thank God enough for this summer and being able to spread His word with this amazing organization called Impact! Mission Camps.

My First Impact (during a pandemic)

August 4, 2020 by Mikayla Barnes Leave a Comment

Posted: 8/4/20 at 12:00pm. Article by Samantha Richard.

When I first heard of Impact, I knew that this experience was going to help me grow in my faith which was my ultimate goal for this year. I had never been to an Impact camp before, much less even heard of it until last October when I was on a retreat for my campus ministry. When I was first accepted for the job, I became overjoyed at the fact that I was going to meet so many great people throughout this experience since we were going to be traveling all over Virginia to the different camps. I got hit hard with the news that camp was going to be virtual this year due to the ongoing concern of COVID-19; I was really looking forward to hearing other students’ experiences through Christ and how Impact has helped them grow in their faith. Even though this virus changed my summer plans completely, I am incredibly grateful for this virtual experience I had with Impact.

Samantha Richard

All of the staff members bonded quickly, which made for an awesome summer. From recording worship to competing against each other in challenges, I enjoyed every minute of it. This summer was a great time for me to reflect on what my goals in faith were and how I wanted to grow more in Christ, and I think I did just that. With the support of my fellow staff members, I was able to share an important piece of my walk with Christ, something I had never felt comfortable sharing before. Having the experience of living with my coworkers made for an eventful, yet amazing summer because so many memories were made with this wonderful group of people.

Although I did not get the chance to experience all that Impact has to offer, I do feel that I was blessed to receive so much faith and life experience throughout this summer. Impact was my silver lining in a time when the world erupted in chaos and I will forever be grateful to have experienced something as amazing as this. I learned how to be a better person but most importantly, a better follower of Christ. I hope to take what I have learned this summer and apply it to my Christian leadership role I have on campus as well as, throughout the rest of my life. Impact definitely holds a special place in my heart, and I cannot wait to see where the rest of my journey with Impact goes.
